# Allowance calculator

Try a few common ways of setting pocket money, see what each comes to by the week, month and year, and split it into jars for saving, spending and giving.

## Three common ways to set it

There is no right amount; these are approaches families often use, not rules.

- **By age**: an amount per year of age each week, so it grows on each birthday. One a week for each year of age is a popular starting point; adjust it to what you can afford and what the money is expected to cover.
- **Flat amount**: simple, and easy to compare with brothers and sisters.
- **Base plus chores**: everyday helping is expected, while extra jobs (washing the car, weeding) earn more. Put the times per week in, and the calculator adds it up.

## Jars, months and goals

The split puts each week’s money into **save**, **spend** and **give** jars. Amounts are worked out in cents, and any odd cent goes to the jar it rounds towards, so the jars always add up to the whole. A month is shown as an average, 52 weeks ÷ 12, because months are not exactly four weeks. For a goal, the calculator divides what is still needed by the save jar’s weekly amount and rounds up to whole weeks.

## Questions

**What should the allowance cover?**

Decide that first: treats only, or also things like bus fares, gifts for friends or game add-ons. The more it covers, the bigger it needs to be.

**Should pocket money be tied to chores?**

Families differ. Some keep everyday helping unpaid and pay only for extra jobs, which is what the base plus chores option models.

**Is anything I enter saved or sent?**

Your settings are saved only in this browser’s local storage so they are there next time. Nothing is sent anywhere.
